I have a strong desire to see and be seen and to understand and be understood. I am interested in social connections but do not view social connections to be limited by human-to-human interactions. Rather, I understand connections to be forged by everything, everywhere. Connection is cross-generational and multilingual, spanning time and space, compressed into a joint singularity and experienced by individual points of reference. These reference points are understood as perspective (yours and mine), identity (personal history), and conscious (singular and collective). A leaf doesn't understand the structure of its tree. A blade of grass does not understand the network of its field. The perspective we have is limited to an isolated vantage point due to the role we play and the body we inhabit. However, our isolation is not as strict as our first person narrative suggests. Mental capacities extend beyond what we experience on a daily basis and our senses reach farther than what we can touch or perceive.
As an artist I embody a headspace that is overwhelming, full of unfinished sentences, unseen connections and jumbled languages. I am interested in this space not because it has clear answers but because it is an important place to be.isolation is death. this is true for individuals cut off from society, trees removed from their root system and fields of study narcissistically self enveloped. everything is valid and everything informs everything else.
Being an artist affords me to make connections between seemingly disparate fields of study and various ways of thinking that would otherwise remain isolated. i experience freedom other researchers do not and it is my aim to find ways to expose the connections and overlaps that exist.
In many ways my work as an artist is a biological, psychoanalytical and philosophical approach to self determination. I attempt to understand all aspects of the “self” I embody and to assume agency over every area possible. One of my largest fears is to be placed into a “box” not of my own making or to be told what to do or how to behave without sound reasoning I agree with.
While I understand the amount of agency I have is limited, it is my aim to extend my both my understanding and my reach physiologically and psychologically. Previously in my studio practice, I have modified psychotherapeutic techniques, such as my EMDR (eye movement reprocessing and desensitization therapy) in an attempt to re-engineer the neural structures in my brain to produce desired behaviors. These techniques resulted in mirrored-image diptychs that were created simultaneously by opposing sides of my brain and body. In other works, such as my psycho-audio series, I have used manipulated audio clips to alter my psychology in order to determine the boundaries of my mind and body resulting in abstract paintings of layered gestures and fragmented script.
(EMDR #1)
For these studio based adaptations of experiments the pictorial plane of a painting becomes a window to the mind. By creating experiments that control for isolated brain regions and placing them in novel situations, it has been my aim to gain a better understanding of their individual roles in the formation and understanding of the self. Through the targeting and mapping specific neural networks these experiments focus on issues of conscious and unconscious experience, mind and body interaction, rumination, gestural asymmetry and repetition.
The following is an example of a simple studio based experimental adaptation:

One of the overarching themes in my work is the investigation how an individual forms a unique identity, or a “self” and from there, how they are able to connect with and understand “others”.
Personal identities are constructed from a blend of biological and physiological factors, which enable an individual to process and navigate internal and external stimuli. Over time, individuals acquire a personal history, narrated by memories. The way an individual interprets a set of memories, tends to dramatically affect the way he or she interprets new stimuli in a present moment which in turn, determine the projections he or she make into their future. I find it particularly important to understand the structure and formation of identities because each person’s identity sets the groundwork for their unique vantage point or perspective.
I find it both strange and interesting how easily memories can be shifted and personal identities can be rearranged when addressed from a different perspective. recently I developed a multi-modal psychotherapy treatment to treat myself for symptoms of PTSD. This project took the form of exhibition ready video and projection piece and a pseudo mid treatment case study. To request a copy of this document please fill out the form below.

More recently I have been researching theoretical physics, multidimensional spacetime and mirror neuron networks to understand how communication of thought manifests and travels.
This work is building upon conversations of, neurology, philosophy, psychology, particle physics, quantum mechanics and cosmology. I flow in and out of these fields looking for patterns, overlaps and self replicating systems in effort to build a narrative that connects them all. Thus far I have only been able to connect with psychologist at Duke University (which was incredibly generative for two bodies of work) but anticipate building working relationships with physicist and neurologist in the coming year. As my interest grow no matter where I am in my work and research or what connections I am attempting to forge, neurology and brain chemistry are the common threads running through everything. Networks keep it all alive.
Loops exist between brains. The physical composition of our neural structures can be altered, networks activated and minds permeated simply by being in the presence of another.
We are surrounded by an expansive network of energy, particles and wavelengths that are constantly flowing in, out and around us. We in turn, are continually generating, receiving, filtering, and manipulating these networks as a means to connect. Many of the most important and pivotal connections experienced exist beyond the perception of physical touch or physical nearness.
Everything is material. everything is build out of something else. different materials have different ways of behaving and are afforded different access to their environments. I find quantum leap particularly fascinating.
The same thing in two places at once… This means two (or more) distinct perspectives that are culminated into one and are experience both separately and collectively.
-space time, time
Though physicist Garrett Lisi, author of the E8 dimensional spacetime model which builds off of the flower of life symbol (which has been found in every prominent continent, culture, philosophy and religion dating back to the beginning of history … well before the scientific method was deployed on the world and mathematical precision of the cosmos or quantum realm), strongly dislikes the model string theorist and Brian Green offers, one thing remains clear with both of their theories, there is more than meets the eye.
As the math unfolds it not only allows for but requires 8 to 12 dimensions. Most people believe we only live in a 3 dimensional universe. However, it is only because of the 4th and 5th dimensions that we are able to perceive the first three.
Everything matters. Everything is matter. Matter is stuff. Stuff has energy. Everything has energy.
Particle physics research focuses on studding the interaction of subatomic particles (electrons, protons, neutrons, quarks [and depending on the model being used, strings]). The way things interact on the tiniest of scales describes and predicts how things interact on the grandest of scales. Thus particle physicists are often avid cosmologists.
regarding multidimensional space time
Einstein nearly 100 years ago set forth the theory of general relativity which intrinsically links space, time and gravity. This idea has since been adopted and is the primary working model in use today. One remarkable thing about this theory is it postulates that everything exists inside of a traversable fabric, effectively referred to as, “the fabric of the universe”. Gravity works more as density across this elastic fabric and creates indentations which subsequently proportionality bend space and time that create orbital paths of attraction. We, however have fixed points of perspective. As we see it nothing bends because what we see bends with us. We become part of the warp because the space time we experience (the fabric we are on) are inextricably tethered.
This fabric is really fucking important.
It explains all sorts of bizarre shit.
As the math plays out (depending on who you read) the amount of energy in the universe allows for eight to twelve dimensions. Theoretical physicist such as Brian Greene and Garrett Lisi have begun mapping and measuring the dimensions we can perceive and those we know to be there but cannot experience first hand.
If one follows this “worm hole” far enough they'll run into all sorts of scifi “craziness”. however, for now let’s stick with what is known to be…
Space and time are intrinsically linked (general relativity) which provides a structure for matter to exist in and on (fabric). Everything is made of the same “stuff” just different mixes of it. All matter has energy and all energy moves matter.
Fabric folds… like bed sheets or lycra
Now, imagine a dot. This dot is not on anything and is not going anywhere. In fact, its not really even there. Its merely a static, nonexistent/imaginary point of reference. Its just a dot.
That is the first dimension
Put that dot on a flat plane (piece of paper) with another dot and join them with a line.
Second dimension (length, width)
Now put a fold in the paper to represent height
3rd
Space and time essentially cover 4 and 5
The others require more folds. And all of these folds exist in the same fabric turing in and over on itself and we are in the middle of it stuck on that damn 2-d plane which we perceive to be 3.
These folds explain strange things like quantum leap in which one particle spontaneously disappears and repairs in a new place, or some how manages to be in two (or more) places at once. Its not that we are missing something, its just that this particle is not bound to the fabric the same way we are, thus it has a unique perspective and experience.
Be flexible with on time for a moment (though we know it is not) ….
It’s like a bird who is eating a farmers seed in the low planes who wants to get back to it’s family at the the top of a tree at the peak of a mountain. To do this the bird is not going to scoot its little feathery ass along the ground like human or other land bound creature. For the bird there is no need to trudge along the dangerous and time-consuming pre-marked hiking trail. No. That fucker’s going to fly. The bird’s point A to point B are different. It doesn't have to walk along the fabric as we do. Thus it’s perspective and experience in time is different too. Where as we have a lot of ground to cover it can travel in a straight shot. Thus a simple observer could reasonably perceive the same bird in two spots at once simply because they forgot to look up into the sky while it was flying. Instead, they were looking along the hiking trail wondering how the bird managed to travel all that way without being seen.
So, particles behave differently. Nonetheless they exist in the fabric of space time. They just have the ability to travel folds in the fabric that we cannot.
everything is matter
matter is stuff.
stuff has energy
For string theorists this breaks down to the finest of fine. atoms>electrons, protons, neutrons > quarks >strings
There is nothing without stuff and there is no stuff without energy.
neurology time!
My partner has eyes in the back of her head. How are partners able to sense each other's antics without the use of traditional modes of communication? How is it possible for the same thought and emotion to arise in separate minds without the application of auditory, visual or tactile output/input?
Ideas, thoughts, cognition, consciousness are all stuff. Real stuff. But like our bird particle friend this stuff behaves in a way that is beyond the realm of common folk understanding.
Mind you i am traversing what appears to be uncharted territory. (At least i have not read ore heard anything about this yet.)
ok, so here we go
Stuff travels on fabric carried by energy particles. Ideas (which for the purposes of this conversation is stuff we have yet learned how to see or measure) also must travel on the fabrics of multi demential spacetime.
In his book The Social Animal, David Brooks analyses mirror neuron behavior stating, “the same thought and feeling can arise in different minds with an invisible network filling the space between them”. He must have been pulling his ideas from Vilayanur S. Ramachandran, a neurologist based at the University of San Diego who has been doing incredible things mapping the behavior or mirror neurons. Ramachandran believes that in some way some types of neurons are not bound to the body the same way our fingers are.
So what if the the thoughts produced by the mind generate particles that are carried by energy across the fabric of space time. Could they be perceived or received and interpreted by someone with in range similar to a hotspot created by a cellphone. The thought particle could travel the inner-folded fabric and “appear” in two places at once without behaving any differently than it normally does. This would be a quantum leap of though. The same thought in two minds.
It would also account for the order given to the random number generators around the glob surrounding times of international disaster such as 9/11 or a natural occurrence such as a tsunami in which the majority of individual minds around the world are intensely focused on one thing.
"So, the lowest possible energy of a given system must be greater than the minimum potential of the well -- its zero-point energy. This leads us to postulate the collective potential of all particles everywhere with their individual zero-point energies merging into one universal zero point field. The theories and scientific research in this particular area of quantum physics lay the ground work for attempting to explain how the mind/ brain/brain waves initiate transactions in the natural; how our thoughts commingle with everything else, and cause matter to manifest in our lives. The more we look at this area, the clearer the God/science connection becomes. If thoughts equal energy and energy equals matter, than thoughts become matter. Observe your thoughts as they will manifest themselves in your life in the natural via the ZPF".

thoughts are made of matter
the particles are simply too small to perceive
as they exist in the quantum level and are not bound to the same regions of physical interaction as we are. unfortunately our minds are week. we can only see the present which we moment by moment reinterpret through all of our past presents (history) and simultaneously make projections into the future. that being said the fluid way we traverse spacetime is an illusion. Space time is not simply a 3 dimensional existence perceived and experienced by a 4th dimension. as the math plays out it allows for ten to twelve dimensions (depending on the physicist you encounter). otherwise, if we resolve to having only 3 or 4 dimensions there ends up being and extreme excess of energy in the cosmos un accounted for.
simply because you cannot see it does not mean it is not there.
this is both science and philosophy. belief and systematic observation
The function of mirror neurons has caused me to question my identification of self with regards to the physical boundaries of my body. Does a self exist only in the solid compositional state perceived by a body, or are there unseen layers of self being continuously emitted and received in an overlapping or intertwined space?
Inspired by the improvisation mirroring exercise which involves a leader who creates movements and a follower who simultaneously mimics the leader's motion I collaborated with my colleague, Kelsey Sheaffer (artist and dancer) and created a painting exercise to explore the blurring that occurs between the roles of "leader" and "follower".
During the exercise, the leader and follower face each other on either side of a translucent porous 6'x3' surface. The leader's objective is to trace the form of the follower in paint. The follower’s aim is to mirror the marks made by the leader. In effect, each participant creates a mirrored images of the "follower", though both are working with extrinsically distinct objectives.

The follower’s aim is to mirror the marks made by the leader. In effect, each participant creates a mirrored images of the "follower", though both are working with extrinsically distinct objectives.

As I pursue these areas of study it is causing me to question the way I make formal decisions in my art. Matthew Ritchie is an artist I have looking into a lot recently. His work draws from philosophy, mythology, cosmology and physics. The forms of his paintings are built upon numerous layers of structures and dimensions. Like me he works to harness science to meet an art end.
Looking at his work has caused me to realize that the two dimensional surfaces I am creating can be pushed further. My work that deals with tracing the inner psychology of my mind can be pushed further and be labored over more deliberately. The structure of the psychoanalysis will still be present, but my hope is it will become just one of the many layers flowing in out and around the work I make going forward.
This method I am now working to develop will bring my work out of the pseudo scientific realm and situate me firmly in art by taking me out of the immediacy of "experimental" studio adaptations and instead will use the experiments as a launching point for a larger more layered and complex visual field.
As with any new language, theory, concept or philosophy, it takes time for it to unravel, be pieced together and make sense. currently i am in the beginning stages of what it is i am forming and as such there are many detours that originate as part of my interest and end up being superfluous.
Much of my work originates from intensely personal motifs. I will always have the need for solitude. For me it is a place of contemplation, meditation and refinement. However, I am not satisfied being alone, nor am I satisfied making egocentric work. Rather, it is my aim to synthesize a language that has many points of entry built upon a vocabulary that has the ability to speak to everyone on some fundamental level. Though I am heavily influenced by science I am not a scientist. Nonetheless, I do desire to make work that has integrity. Thus I do everything I can as an artist to understand these complex fields and translate what is known as I investigate what is unknown.
