"EMDR" is a painting processes that traces the interactions between the known physical components of my brain chemistry and the parts of my mind that are otherwise “unseen”. The gestural abstractions resulting from this painting process are marks of the hidden internal translated through scribbles, stains and washes. The process itself comments on the nature of mind as it relates to self determination, behavioral modification, and personal identity.
Developed from studies in psychotherapy and neural plasticity, the eight step treatment known as eye movement reprocessing and desensitization was engineered to treat patients suffering from PTSD. It does so by temporarily affording liner processing and language to regions of the brain where traumatic memories are stored, regions that are not associated with sequential thinking or language. A temporary synaptic bridge is established between brain regions which normally do not directly interact through a series of bilateral movement and mental exercises. This connection facilitates the exposure, translation and processing of content that is stored without linguistically descriptive qualities. By adapting the eight step treatment into a six step painting process I am able to access the space between the hemispheres of my brain while my mind is in a novel state of translation.
